Cycle in Roslagen

Roslagen with its natural beauty, shimmering archipelago and picturesque countryside is amazing to discover by bike. We offer describes a number of package trips which allow you to experience Roslagen on small roads close to nature and the varied landscape, whilst avoiding heavy traffic as far as possible. You stay overnight in cosy accommodation with a personal touch, where several of the hosts offer bike rentals and can provide lunch and dinner if you book in advance. Don’t hesitate to ask them about local bike trails and places of interest.
The cycle routes are not signposted, but partially coincide with the bike trails Postvägen and Kustlinjen. The stretches of road where you may experience heavy traffic are marked with a warning triangle in the Cykla i Roslagen map.

1.The cultural tour

Stockholm, Ljusterö, Bergshamra – approx. 26 km of bike rides
”A tour of a coastal landscape steeped in culture”
This tour starts by taking Waxholmsbolaget's boat from Stockholm or Vaxholm to Linanäs on Ljusterö.
The tour continues to the mainland via the car ferry from Ljusterö to Östanå and Roslags-Kulla and Bergshamra
Places of interest nearby are Penningby Castle, Malmsjöns Nature Reserve and one of Sweden’s oldest national parks, Ängsö, which is on an island just off the coast and can be reached by boat.

2. Following in Saint Birgittas footsteps

The tour starts in Bergshamra and traverses the district of Länna, which can be said to personify the essence of Roslagen. Your destination is the historic environs of Finsta, according to tradition Saint Birgitta's birthplace..


3. Between land and sea - bike and kayak package

Bergshamra - Kapellskär – approx 44 km of bike rides

This bike ride traverses the typical landscape of Roslagen by pretty backroads and is great to combine with a kayak trip. Be sure to have your map handy so you don’t lose your way.The tour starts from Bergshamra Bay and  going north-east. The route continues on small roads past Spillersboda, towards Håtö, crosses the E18 and meets up with the old road to Rådmansö. The route takes you past Rådmansö church and school, uphill and downhill, before winding up in Gräddö which is 6 km from the final destination Kapellskär in Rådmansö peninsula.The holiday village Kapellskäret comprises hostel, camping and marina. Riddersholm Nature Reserve has 19 km of hiking trails through unparalleled countryside with stunning flower meadows.



 

4. Roll around Rådmansö Norrtälje –Kapellskär, or  vice versa!

From Norrtälje you ride southeast through woodland and meadows. From Spillersboda to Gräddö and soon you will pass Rådmansö church The village of Gräddö has a grocery store, guest harbour and marina. Kajak & Uteliv by Gräddö jetty offers kayak rentals and guided tours of Roslagen’s excellent paddling waters just where the leafy inner archipelago meets the barren outer archipelago. In Kapellskär you will stay overnight at the Kapellskäret hostel, close to  Riddersholm Nature Reserve .
From Kapellskär Harbour ferries go to Åland, Finland and the Baltics. From the jetty at Kapellskärsudden the Vaxholm boat traffics Arholma to the north and Stockholm to the south.



5.Vikingavägen

Round Lake Erken & Söderbykarl
”Cycle around Roslagen’s largest lake and experience the Viking Age”

A cycle tour round Lake Erken can originate from a variety of starting points depending on what distance you are willing to cycle. For example you can set off from Norrtälje, Finsta or Estuna and end up in Söderbykarl. If you only want a round tour of the lake it’s approx. 35 km starting and finishing at Estuna church.
Lake Erken is the second largest lake in the county of Stockholm, only surpassed by Lake Mälaren. The name is old Swedish and means the shining one, which is a good name for this clear lake. On Erken’s shores you can experience one of our finest Swedish traditions, fishing for crayfish. When in season fresh Erken crayfish are on sale in various places if you fancy cooking them yourself.



6. The Jems of Roslagen

Norrtälje –Söderbykarl- Grissleham – approx 68 km of bike rides
The tour starts in Norrtälje ,the heart of Roslagen, a uniquely homely town .This trip works equally well in either direction. The route coincides in places with Postvägen (the old postal route).


 

7.Coastal contrasts

Grisslehamn – Herräng- Harg- Öregrund  approx 70 km of bike rides.. 
“A journey from south to north visiting fishing ports and reminders of an industrial heritage”
This tour, which takes you from traditional fishing communities to industrial towns steeped in history, starts from Grisslehamn on Väddö’s northern tip. This lively fishing port has a ferry service to Åland and is known for artists and writers like Albert Engström and Vilhelm Moberg, who lived and worked in the area.


 

8.Roslagen archipelago by bike and boat

The tour starts in picturesque Öregrund i north, through island Singö, along to Sea of Åland to  Grisslehamn.The tour then winds its way on quiet mainland roads to Björkö.After a good night’s sleep and breakfast you can spend the day relaxing or choose from a variety of activities. At 4 pm the Waxholmsbolaget boat docks at the Östersjö brygga landing stage on its way to Vaxholm and Stockholm.
